A very similar work to the same author’s “For bravery in the field”, a register of the Military Medal, which I reviewed for the Long, Long Trail. It is a listing, alphabetically by surname, of all those who were awarded the Military Cross during the First World War. Each entry gives name, rank, regiment and the dates of editions of the “London Gazette” in which the MC was announced and the citation published. In some instances the entry gives a snippet of additional biographical detail: this appears to be mainly of those who lost their lives and from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission information about them. As such, it is a valuable and quick reference for checking whether a man was awarded the MC and a few more details if that was the case. The book opens with some brief historical background about the Military Cross, a list of abbreviations used in the book and a page of “miscellany of odd facts”, such as the list of winners of the Victoria Cross who also gained the MC.
At a whopping 757 pages (for some reason the publisher’s website says 712) it is a weighty piece of work. I am not convinced that the paperback production would stand up to much handling.
